TRIBUTE

timothylaird.jpeg

This page is a tribute to IPD Office Timothy "Jake" Laird who was killed in the line of duty on August 18, 2004 while trying to stop a mentally ill gunman who was using an assault weapon and had already injured four of his fellow officers.

Jake's life long ambition had been to be a law enforcement officer.  Not only did he achieve this, but he was known by other officers for doing the job well and in an exemplary manner.

He leaves behind a daughter, Kaylee, who is being well cared for by not only her biological family, but also her law enforcement family and the community for which her father served and gave his life.

Thank you, Jake, for your dedication to your job.  You will never be forgotten by grateful citizens of Indianapolis.

We also want to acknowledge and thank the many officers who were involved in the events that took place on the southside of Indianapolis the night that Jake was killed.  Many other officers' lives were put on the line to stop a mentally ill gunman and to protect the citizens of the neighborhood where the gunfire was crackling like popcorn kernels in hot oil.

Officers Timothy Conley, Andrew Troxell, Leon Essig and Peter Koe were officers injured during this nightmare.

No one is unaware of how much more serious this incident could have been and we are indebted to the skill, courage, and commitment of the officers of the Indianapolis Department for the job they not only did that night, but that they do daily.

THANK YOU TO THE WOMEN AND MEN OF I.P.D.
